How it works

  1. Describe the job: what's being blasted, how big it is, where it is, and whether you want mobile service or a shop drop-off.
  2. We route it to an independent blasting company that serves your part of Michigan.
  3. They contact you to ask questions and quote. You decide whether to hire anyone.

"Sandblasting" usually isn't sand anymore

People say sandblasting, but most professional jobs today use other abrasives: crushed glass, garnet, aluminum oxide, steel grit, glass bead, walnut shell, baking soda, or dry ice. Silica sand can cause silicosis, and NIOSH has recommended since 1974 that it not be used as a blasting abrasive. The right media depends on what you're stripping and what's underneath. Mobile or shop?

Big or fixed things like houses, decks, trailers, tanks, and boats are usually blasted on site by a mobile crew. Smaller parts, wheels, and car bodies on a rotisserie often get better results in a shop booth or cabinet, where media is recovered and dust is contained.

Typical costs

HomeGuide puts sandblasting at about $1–$5 per square foot or $45–$80 per hour for basic work, with complex jobs running higher. See the full cost guide →

Painted before 1978? Homes and child-occupied facilities built before 1978 may have lead-based paint. Blasting it is tightly restricted. Read the lead & silica safety page →
